Thursday, January 23rd, 2014 10:57 pm剧目:Newsies
时间:2014/01/22
地点:Nederlander Theatre, Broadway, NYC
Main Cast:
Jack Kelly: Brendon Stimson
Joseph Pulitzer: John Dossett
Katherine Plumber: Kara Lindsay
Davey: Ben Fankhauser
Crutchie: Andy Richardson
Medda: LaVon Fisher-Wilson
Les: Joshua Colley
We really enjoyed Newsies. :D The one thing that REALLY stood out was the castBrendon Stimson was usually an understudy for the main hero, Jack Kelly, but he just oozed charisma! Totally rad! Joshua Colley as Les was just absolutely adorable. Ben Fankhauser channeled Lee Pace likability as Davey. In general I just really liked all the Newsie boys, and the choreography definitely earned that Tony.
The parts that didn't quite work for me: Mainly, the romance. To be fair though, now that I think about it, it's very rare for me to encounter a musical with believable romance. Even the great Les Mis certainly didn't manage it. Miss Saigon had me complaining that Thuy's love for Kim was far better portrayed that than Chris'. I have already forgotten pretty much everything about Phantom except that I didn't like it. And don't even get me started on the romance in Mama Mia, Pippin, and Cinderella... So all in all, even that part wasn't all that bad. Plus, I actually did like the duet "Something to Believe In." Although that was possibly the ONE place where the vocal abilities shone through, because otherwise the singing was adequate but unremarkable. Medda was a far cry from Mama Morton in Chicago. "That's Rich" could have been a great belter song, but with the delivery it just wasn't.
Oh and this was the 20th Broadway musical I've watched. So yay. :)
总结:故事3星,制作3.5星,音乐3.5星,唱功3星,演技4星。
Broadway Rankings: Les Miserables & The Book of Mormon > Chicago & Miss Saigon & Billy Elliot & Priscilla, Queen of the Desert & Jersey Boys > How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying & Pippin & A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder & Newsies > The Lion King & Wicked & Mary Poppins & Mama Mia & Kinky Boots > Evita & Cinderella & Rent & Phantom of the Opera
